Champix treatment usually lasts 12 weeks. You may be able to quit smoking permanently if you continue another 12 weeks of treatment after the successful completion of the initial 12 weeks course.
Before taking Champix, keep following things in mind:
- Dosage of Champix is available in two forms, viz. 0.5mg (white) and 1mg (blue) tablets
- Start initially with 0.5mg dosage of Champix once a day or as advised by your doctor
- You may increase the dosage of Champix up to 0.5mg twice daily after 3 days
- Dosage of Champix may be increased to 1mg twice daily after 7 days. This is when you should stop smoking completely
- Champix should be taken with a glass of water (8 ounces) after meals
- Try not to skip the dosage of Champix. In any case, do not take a double dosage of Champix for the missed dose
Dosage of Champix given above may not be right for everyone. The effect of Champix varies from one person to another, so it is advisable to take Champix under doctor's supervision and in the dosage prescribed.
Champix treatment may take around 12 weeks. You may talk to your doctor if you cannot abstain from nicotine during these 12 weeks.
Always keep a record of your use of drugs like insulin, asthma medicines, and blood thinners when you are taking Champix; you may need to change the dose of these medicines before starting and ending Champix treatment.
Storage –
• You should store Champix at room temperature (18°C to 30°C)
• Try and keep Champix away from moisture, sunlight and heat
• Keep Champix out of reach of children
• Do not keep Champix in bathroom or kitchen
Remember
Champix might cause dizziness or tiredness. Patients are advised to avoid hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery after taking Champix dosage. Caution is advised in patients with kidney problems, epilepsy or a history of mental illness, such as depression. Champix should not be used by pregnant women and is not recommended for under 18s.
Dosage of Champix should under no circumstances be started, altered or stopped without consulting your doctor. You should also report any side effects of Champix without fail.
